Description
D'Arcy Spice is an old English variety originating in Colchester, Essex in 1785. In a good summer it will have a spicy, nutmeg flavour but even in a poor summer it will still make a delicious, richly flavoured and sweet little apple.
Firm rather than crisp, with some mild astringency in the skin.
It is an excellent heritage apple for eating and juicing and will store well into the following Spring. The tree itself is tough and hardy, though it is fairly slow growing and makes only a small tree. It will often do well in less than favourable conditions and offers good disease resistance too. The apples hang well on the tree, so good for more exposed sites, ripening late in the season and storing well.
A very good addition in an orchard.
